Smartphone Use Could Make You Fat
News of the connection between smartphone use and obesity comes from a study performed at the Simón Bolívar University in Columbia, South America. Researchers looked at 1,060 students whose average age was 19 to 20 and found that young women who used their phones five or more hours per day were 63.9 percent likely to be overweight and 57.4 percent likely to be obese. The young men who used their phones a comparable amount were 36.1 percent likely to be overweight and 42.6 percent likely to be obese. “Spending too much time in front of the Smartphone facilitates sedentary behaviors, reduces the time of physical activity, which increases the risk of premature death, diabetes, heart disease, different types of cancer, osteoarticular discomfort and musculoskeletal symptoms,” reported study leader Mirary Mantilla-Morrón, a cardiac pulmonary and vascular rehabilitation specialist at the University. She added that the students using their phones five hours or more daily were twice as likely as other students to drink more sugary drinks and consume fast food, sweets and snacks. The results were presented at the American College of Cardiology Latin America Conference July 26, 2019.
