A Weight-Loss Bean? The Mighty Adzuki!
The adzuki bean is a legume that originated in China and is cultivated throughout East Asia and the world. Also known as red mung beans, adzukis are meaty and nutty in flavor and can help to satisfy hunger cravings. Often made into a sweet red paste, Dr. Weil suggests that these nutritious and tasty beans are also an ideal protein to add to soups, chilis, salads and veggie burgers.
Low in fat and naturally gluten-free, they contain plenty of fiber and micronutrients like magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese and B vitamins. In traditional Chinese medicine, adzukis are said to support bladder, kidney and reproductive functions.
While not providing any magical effect on metabolism, the fiber and nutrients seems to lead to appetite lowering when made a regular part of your diet. Learn more about adzuki beans and try them in our Vegetarian Chili recipe.
