For Better Health, Prioritize Plant-based Meals
A recent review of 48 previously published papers found that vegetarian and vegan diets are generally associated with better cardiovascular health and reduced cancer risk compared to diets high in meat, refined grains, sugar, and salt. Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine, the University of Bologna in Italy, and other institutions found that vegetarian and vegan diets were linked to better cholesterol levels, body-mass index, blood sugar control, and markers of inflammation, as well as to lower risks of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and death. Although more high-quality research is needed, the authors of the analysis emphasize the potential of plant-based diets as effective preventive strategies for major chronic diseases.
