Pick Plants For Better Heart Health
A recent study led by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health suggests that diets with a higher ratio of plant-based protein to animal-based protein may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease. The study analyzed 30 years of dietary and health data compiled from nearly 203,000 participants, documenting over 16,000 cases of cardiovascular disease.
Participants consuming the highest plant-to-animal protein ratio had a 19 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 27 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease compared to those with the lowest ratio. These benefits — which the researchers attribute to replacing red and processed meats with plant proteins such as nuts and legumes — were amplified among those with higher overall protein intake. Combining higher plant protein intake with overall higher protein consumption appears to provide the most significant heart health benefits, they say.
