Intermittent Fasting May Benefit Gut Health & Weight
Researchers from Arizona State University and elsewhere have found more evidence to support the health benefits of intermittent fasting. The investigators assigned 41 overweight or obese people to either calorie restriction or an intermittent fasting and protein pacing protocol for eight weeks. Protein pacing is a dietary strategy in which protein intake is evenly distributed throughout the day. The researchers determined that the intermittent fasting and protein pacing group experienced better gut health, weight loss, and metabolic responses than their peers who simply restricted their caloric intake. They also showed increased diversity in gut microbiota, as well as elevated levels of beneficial microbes associated with a lean body type and higher levels of certain proteins linked to weight loss and fat burning. The findings underscore the intricate relationship between diet, gut microbiome, and metabolism, suggesting a promising approach to managing obesity and other metabolic disorders.
