Tai Chi Could Benefit Blood Pressure

Exercise in general is beneficial for managing blood pressure — but tai chi may be especially helpful. One recent study by researchers in Beijing, China, compared tai chi to aerobic exercise in 342 people diagnosed with pre-hypertension, defined as having a systolic blood pressure of 120 to 139 mm Hg and/or diastolic blood pressure of 80 to 89 mm Hg.
After one year, those in the study who practiced tai chi four times a week had greater reductions in systolic blood pressure compared to those who performed the same amount of weekly aerobic exercise. The tai chi participants also achieved normal blood pressure readings more often than their peers performing aerobic exercise. While this study demonstrates promising results, further research is necessary to confirm findings and better understand tai chi’s mechanisms for lowering blood pressure.
