Worried About Your Thyroid? Watch For These 5 Signs
According to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, about one in eight women will develop a thyroid problem in her lifetime. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the lower neck that influences metabolism and the function of the kidneys, heart, liver, brain and skin.
It is important to make sure your thyroid is functioning normally – some common signs of abnormal function include:
- Unexplained weight gain or loss. A common sign of a thyroid disorder, weight gain can indicate low levels of thyroid hormones, called hypothyroidism, while weight loss can indicate high levels, or hyperthyroidism.
- Changes in energy, mood and sleep patterns. People with hypothyroidism may feel tired and depressed, while those with hyperthyroidism may be restless and irritable. Both states can lead to poor sleep and insomnia.
- Feeling too hot or too cold. Hypothyroidism can lead to feeling cold, while excessive sweating and feeling too hot is a symptom of hyperthyroidism.
- Changes in heart rate. A quicker or slower pace can indicate a thyroid issue.
- Hair loss. This is common for either type. Note that once the disorder is treated, hair should grow back.
If you notice any of these symptoms, as well as any swelling in the neck area, talk with your physician. Simple tests can help determine if your thyroid is over- or under-functioning, and proper medications and lifestyle changes can help address any concerns. Know that in general, physicians trained in integrative medicine generally know how to look deeper at your thyroid levels if you are having symptoms, despite “normal” levels.
